See para. 3 of despatch.

Here again the recommendation may, I think,

be approved.

The Committee point out that rent allowances

in some cases form an unduly large proportion of an

officer's total salary and they recommend the

restriction of the allowance to 10 per cent. of bas

salary in the case of married officers and 5 per

Lasic

cent. of salary in the case of single officers.

Here again I see no objection in principle to the

recommendation but the Governor states that some

hardship might be caused by the curtailment of

allowances already in operation, particularly in

present circumstances, and recommends that the

modifications should be held in abeyance pending

further consideration.

I think we should agree to

this.

Officers required by the nature of their (49.4at Habitals on Police Luwies

work to live in Government quarters were formerly

exempted from payment of the usual rent of 6 per cent.

The usual rent is now 12 per cent. and the Committee

recommend that in such circumstances the rental to

be paid should in all cases be reduced by 6 per cent.,

as complete exemption from payment may be too great a compensation for the disadvantages of living in the as

Residential Allowances.

Than

in effect, the respect,

There are striking variations in the

residential allowances paid to various branches of

the service, according to the present revised scheme

of salaries, and the Committee suggest that these

variations do not correspond to any distinction

between some at least of the branches of the service

affected.
